Dr Alec Foster is General Manager for Scion’s Bioproducts and Biomanufacturing Areas – which include the Portfolios covering High Value Biorefineries, Distributed and Circular Manufacturing, Bioproducts and Packaging and Integrated Bioenergy. This work focuses on developing products and processes for the Circular Bioeconomy, where sustainable design and renewable resources drive economic growth. The shift presents significant opportunities for New Zealand to address climate change while building new industries.

Prior to Scion, Alec led a major European synthetic biology program focused on engineered microorganisms for materials development. His work has resulted in over 40 patents and collaborative projects with international biotech companies. He contributes to industry direction through roles on BioTechNZ's Executive Council, APPITA's New Zealand section, and as an MBIE advisor on gene technology legislation.
