The NZ Wood-Resene Timber Design Awards winners were announced last night with the Welhaus “Beach Barn” winning the new Scion-sponsored category, Novel Application of Wood Award.
The category was judged by Scion Science Leader Doug Gaunt who said the Welhaus “Beach Barn” (Welhaus Ltd.) ticks all the boxes.
“The beauty of it is that a range of wood products is used inside and out. It’s been constructed with prefabricated timber made to measure using CNC (computer numerical control) machining, which is a relatively new concept to use with timber in New Zealand. The result is a modern, healthy and energy efficient home.”
The calibre of the finalists in the category was impressive according to Doug. “Four out of five finalists used CNC technology. It’s a long way from working with the old four by two. It’s a trend we’re likely to see more of in the future, which is great for our timber industry.”
Scion CEO Warren Parker presented the award last night at the ceremony in Auckland.
Rotorua also featured prominently in the awards. Eat Streat was highly commended in the Exterior Innovation and Infrastructure category and Mayor Steve Chadwick’s leadership role in the Rotorua Lakes Council’s Wood First initiative was recognised with the inaugural “Wood First” Award.
The awards event, in its 40th year, showcases the innovative, structural and aesthetic use of timber in New Zealand from architects and engineers. For more information about the awards see http://www.nzwood.co.nz/news-and-events/40th-anniversary-of-timber-design-awards
