Sustainable development winner at the 2020 Timber Design Awards

6 April 2020

Scion congratulates Christchurch City Council Eco Design and Jasmax for their winning and highly commended entries in the sustainable development category of the NZ Wood Resene Timber Design Awards.

The Scion-sponsored sustainable development category was a new addition in 2020. It was created to recognise the use of timber and wood-based products in projects that are achieving low-environmental impact and enhancing New Zealand's unique society and environment.

Scion Chief Executive, Dr Julian Elder, says, “Scion has been a sponsor of the Timber Design Awards for a number of years now, and we are proud to be involved with this event. The sustainable development category aligns with our work undertaking research into high-value timber manufacturing and products.

Highly Commended – “Arvida Living Well Park Lane” by Jasmax

Jasmax were highly commended for their entry ‘Arvida Living Well Park Lane’. The project was specifically acknowledged for instilling a sense of community among residents through shared spaces and connections to the outdoors. Biophilic design principles were used to promote exposure to natural materials such as the modified timber products and exposed CLT panels within the building. Environmental considerations were shown in the quantity of insulation, airtight indoor environment and choice of CO2 sequestering wood products.

In light of New Zealand’s COVID-19 alert level four, the 2020 awards were announced virtually via the NZ Wood Resene Timber Design Awards website and digital platforms on 2 April.

Julian says, “We also congratulate the awards committee for so quickly altering their plans, switching from a gala dinner to announcing the awards online. It’s great to have some good news to celebrate – albeit from home – and to acknowledge the hard work of the awardees.”
