The government has proposed changes to the forestry settings in the New Zealand Emissions Trading scheme that it hopes can address some of the challenges arising from the significant amount of afforestation needed to meet New Zealand’s net emissions-reduction targets. The proposed changes could help.  But drawing on Scion’s 75 years of forestry research, we can see some other options that could achieve a similar result in ways that reflect the urgency of the climate change challenge.  Our submission has more detail.
