Scion launches its annual Suffrage Scholarship

18 September 2009

Over the next month, senior female students living in Rotorua have an exciting opportunity to get a head start on their future science careers.

Scion has announced the launch of its Suffrage Centennial Scholarship for 2009.

First introduced in 1993, the scholarship’s objective is to promote science excellence, and to demonstrate that the profession offers a rewarding career choice for women.

The scholarship is open to senior female students living in Rotorua and attending a Bay of Plenty secondary school. Applicants must be intending to commence a degree course in 2010 in pure or applied sciences.

The scholarship aims to find an individual who is an academic achiever, but this is not the only consideration. Judges will be looking to identify someone who is an all-round performer. Candidates are also judged on criteria such as contribution to their school and the wider community, and career and study ambitions. Pupils who are not the very top achievers in their subjects should therefore not be discouraged from entering, the organisation says.

The successful applicant receives $2,000 to help towards tuition fees. However, previous recipients confirm the greatest benefit of the scholarship is the chance to work at Scion during summer vacations throughout their undergraduate studies. Having experience working on real-world science in a Crown Research Institute adds an impressive highlight to curriculum vitaes, and can make awardees stand out to future employers.

For more information and an application form, visit Scion’s website: www.scionresearch.com. Information has also been sent to local schools.

Closing date for this year’s entries is 5pm on Friday 16 October 2009.
