Scion Board appointments

Today Research, Science and Technology Minister Wayne Mapp announced the appointment of a new chairman, deputy chair and an additional director to the Scion Board with effect from 1 July 2010.
“I am delighted to welcome Tony Nowell and Judith Stanway to the Board and also congratulate current director Alison Andrew to her appointment as Deputy Chair,” said Scion CEO Dr Tom Richardson.
“At the same time I extend my deep and sincere appreciation to outgoing Chairman Dr Russ Ballard and Deputy Chair Bronwyn Monopoli for their huge contribution to Scion’s achievements over the six years they have each served on the Board. Under their guidance Scion has achieved outstanding scientific achievements and much improved financial performance positions.
“New Chairman Tony Nowell brings extensive experience in governance and international trade and development to the Board,” said Dr Richardson.
Mr Nowell is a professional company director and Founding Director of Valadenz Limited, a trade and export development company. Previously he was the CEO of Zespri International and positions he held before then included Managing Director of Griffin’s Food Limited and Regional Vice President of Sara Lee Asia.
Mr Nowell’s governance experience includes roles such as Chair of the Food and Beverage Taskforce, Deputy Chair of Leadership New Zealand, Chair of NZ Packaging Accord Governing Board and a member of the Export Advisory Board of Business of New Zealand.
Ms Stanway, Business Management Partner of BDO Rotorua, is Chair of BDO New Zealand, a large chartered accountancy and business advisory firm. She has worked with the forestry sector for many years, including holding Director’s positions on companies involved with timber processing and distribution. She also has governance experience in tourism and charitable trusts.
“Ms Stanway’s strong accounting and financial expertise will be valuable in overseeing Scion’s continued success,” said Dr Richardson.
