Applications open for Scion Suffrage Centennial Scholarship

Crown Research Institute Scion is giving female senior science students in the Bay of Plenty an exciting opportunity to kick-start their science career with the annual Scion Suffrage Centennial Scholarship.
Applications are now open for the 2011 scholarship which awards the recipient $2,000 towards their studies and the offer of summer holiday work at Scion for the duration of their undergraduate studies.
Previous winners have said that the summer work component of the scholarship is invaluable and provides an important insight into ‘real-world’ science and the opportunity to network and make contacts. It also makes an excellent addition to the student’s curriculum vitae.
Now in its 19th year, the Scion Suffrage Scholarship is open to all female students living in Rotorua and attending their final year of secondary school in the Bay of Plenty. In addition, they must be intending to progress to a New Zealand tertiary institution in 2012 to undertake an undergraduate pure or applied science course.
Amanda Popham, Human Resources Advisor and one of the members of the scholarship judging panel, says while good science grades are important, the judges are really looking for an all-rounder who contributes to both their school and local communities.
“We are looking for students with a passion for learning, a keen interest in science and an ambition to succeed. Of course, good exam results are important, but they will not be the only determining factor in choosing the successful applicant.”

The closing date for applications has been extended to 4pm Friday 4 November 2011.
