Films in the Redwoods

Climbing the Redwood Giants
A film screening in the Redwood Forest will allow the public a bird’s eye view of the world’s tallest trees.
Scion is bringing this film to Rotorua on Wednesday 23 November as the final event in its “Films in the Forest” festival, which celebrates the International Year of Forests.
The award-winning film “Climbing the Redwood Giants” was produced by the National Geographic Society to explore the little-understood environment of the redwood canopy using high-tech aerial laser surveys and breathtaking imagery.
The free public screening, co-sponsored by the Rotorua District Council and Bay of Plenty Regional Council, will be on Wednesday at 7pm under the sails near the Redwood Visitor Centre.
People will need to bring their own chair, blanket and torch.
Scion’s CEO Dr Warren Parker says there is no better place than the Redwood Grove to view a film about redwood forests and to appreciate the wonder of forests.
“International Year of Forests is a global effort to raise awareness on responsible management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests,” he says.
“Our film festival provides an opportunity for the public to come and appreciate not only the stunning beauty of forests, but also the enormous value they bring to the world and to communities.”
As the Crown Research Institute that serves New Zealand’s forestry sector, Scion has a long history of helping to utilise forests for the national good.
