Scion announces Packaging Council award winner

6 September 2011

Crown Research Institute Scion is delighted to announce the winner of the Scion Award for Conceptual Design by a tertiary student as part of the Environmental Packaging Awards. This is the first time Scion has sponsored a category in the biannual awards, which are held by the Packaging Council of New Zealand.

At an awards ceremony in Auckland on Friday 2 September, Massey University student Michelle Pouer received the Scion award for her ‘One size custom fits all’ design. The unique creation redesigned the corrugated box to ensure one corrugated board sheet could custom fit any product or combination of products.

Judges said the design was a clever concept that could help small businesses simplify their packaging needs. They also felt this concept has the potential to be highly commercial.

Elspeth MacRae, Scion’s General Manager Science (Bioproduct Development) presented the award on Friday night and said it was great to see such an innovative yet simple design hold the answer to many packaging issues.

“The design promotes minimal waste not only in terms of the materials used but also in regards to stock inventory and reduced postage costs.

“Scion specialises in creating new packaging products to support New Zealand’s export industries. We are very proud to align ourselves with this high-quality entry that cleverly meets the needs of end-users,” said Dr MacRae.
